Around the sports: A tough week for the crowd, with a few bright spots

The crowd fell short of its season result accuracy in every competition except the Eredivisie in the week to 28 August 2026. That was the overall picture: plenty of tricky results, with the Dutch league holding level rather than joining the slide. These figures include every player, so this is the whole crowd taking its medicine together. At least there were a few calls worth bringing up in the group chat.

Below par, but not without a silver lining

AFL and MLB both returned 48% result accuracy, against season averages of 51% and 52% respectively. In football, the Championship managed 19% against 25%, while La Liga finished at 17% against 24%. Serie A reached 21% against 26%, and Ligue 1 recorded 21% against 23%.

The Eredivisie supplied the welcome exception. Result accuracy matched its season mark of 21%, while exact scores reached 7%, ahead of the season average of 5%. Getting the result right is satisfying enough. Getting the score right when so much else is going astray deserves a little extra smugness.

Crowd vs reality

The calls that came good

There was a much happier story at Geelong Cats v Richmond Tigers. The crowd backed the correct result at 73%, with Geelong Cats beating Richmond Tigers 133-76. That is a bright spot worth hanging on to in a week like this.

The same 73% landed the result in Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets, where New York Mets beat Milwaukee Brewers 3-2. Very different scorelines, but the same welcome outcome for the crowd.

Football had other ideas

League One result accuracy ended at 16%, below its season average of 19%. The draw in Wycombe Wanderers v Plymouth Argyle neatly captures the frustration: Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle finished 1-1, with 0% backing that result.

League Two was tougher still, returning 12% against a season average of 18%. At Salford City v Chesterfield, Salford City lost 0-1 to Chesterfield, another result backed by 0%. Not much room for an I knew it moment there.

Split down the middle, caught by the draw

Luton Town v Notts County was the most divided fixture. Luton Town had 47% backing, Notts County had 47%, and the draw sat at 6%.

Naturally, it finished 2-2. The crowd was evenly split between the teams, only for the least popular option to land. A tidy reminder that agreeing a match is hard to call does not necessarily mean giving the draw much attention.

The week ahead

There are no most-backed teams listed for the week ahead, so there is no early crowd favourite to report. After this week's bumps, there is plenty of room for a better return. Bring your mates into the conversation, have a friendly disagreement, and make your calls.
