Gameweek 4: Crowd accuracy slips below the season average

The crowd got 36% of Premier League results right in Gameweek 4, below its season average of 41%. Exact scores proved trickier too: 6% landed against a season average of 8%. With all 10 games called and finished, this was a round for sharing the blushes as well as the bragging rights. These figures include every player.

Away wins worth a nod

The clearest success came at Sunderland, where Arsenal FC won 0-2. With 91% backing the winning result, the crowd had good reason to feel pleased with that call. Getting the result right is not the same as nailing the score, but it was a welcome bright spot.

Manchester United lost 0-1 to Manchester City FC, rewarding the 63% who called the away win. Meanwhile, Coventry City FC were beaten 0-5 by Brighton & Hove Albion, whose victory had 57% support. The winning side was a popular choice there, even if that scoreline was something else.

Crowd vs reality

The results that caught us out

Only 4% called the draw as Chelsea FC finished 2-2 with Hull City AFC. That was the least supported result among this week's biggest upsets. A handy reminder that a confident call still needs the football to cooperate.

The draw between Liverpool FC and Fulham had just 6% support, with the game ending 0-0. There was another result with 6% backing when Crystal Palace lost 2-3 to Ipswich Town FC. Different scorelines, same uncomfortable feeling for the crowd. Not much room for a victory lap across that lot.

A split decision that landed

Tottenham Hotspur FC and Everton supplied the most divided fixture. The split was Tottenham Hotspur FC 39%, draw 40%, Everton 21%, so the draw had the largest share without anything close to a commanding consensus.

The final score was 0-0, making that narrow crowd preference the correct result. This was not a week when agreement always came easily, but here the most popular answer did the job.

Where the crowd table differs

The crowd table rates Aston Villa and Manchester United lower, while Hull City AFC and Ipswich Town FC are rated higher.

That makes an interesting contrast with the upset results: Hull City AFC and Ipswich Town FC sit on the higher-rated side of the table comparison, yet their Gameweek 4 outcomes still caught the crowd out. A broad view of a team and a call on a particular game are different tests.

A fresh go in Gameweek 5

No most backed teams are listed for Gameweek 5, so there is no crowd favourite to highlight for the next round. After a week below the season averages for both results and exact scores, there is plenty of room for a better collective showing. Bring your mates, keep the banter friendly and make your calls.
