League One predictions, explained

EFL League One is the third tier of English football: 24 clubs, 46 league games each, and a season that runs from early August to the first weekend in May. Three clubs go up, one automatically as champions, one as runners-up and one through the four-team play-off final at Wembley. Four go down into League Two. There is no winter break and no easing off, with midweek rounds, festive doubles and the odd Friday night televised game landing throughout.

Predicting it is a very different exercise to predicting the Premier League. Top-flight markets are picked over by everyone, so the crowd converges on the same handful of scorelines and the edge is thin. League One is noisier. Squads turn over heavily in the summer, loan players arrive in January and change a side overnight, pitches and travel matter, and a relegated club with parachute money can still lose 2-1 at a newly promoted one on a wet Tuesday. Results spread wider, home advantage swings harder, and 1-1 is not the safe default it often is elsewhere.

That lower profile is the point. Nobody has watched all 24 squads, so the casual predictor is not immediately behind the person who reads every tactics column. What wins a League One mini-league is patience, sensible scorelines and knowing your own club properly, not encyclopaedic knowledge of the division.

Call the Scores runs on exact scorelines. You call the full result, home and away, before the whistle. Get the scoreline spot on and it is 3 points. Get the outcome right but the scoreline wrong and it is 1 point. Everything locks at kick-off, so there is no editing once the ball moves, and everyone's calls are revealed together once the round is closed. You are ranked in the global League One table and in any private league you set up, and you can invite mates with a six character code and settle the group chat properly across a whole season.

Because the third tier is so tight, a single gameweek rarely decides anything. The 46 game grind rewards the predictor who keeps calling honest 2-1s and 1-0s rather than chasing a 4-3 for the glory of it, and by March the table usually reflects exactly that.
